ICM 508: Modules 1 & 2 Projects - Audio Design

The Project

After doing some reading and researching on the subjects of sound and planning a podcast, we were tasked with creating a pre-production document for a future podcast project of our own:

  • Create a mind map for your own podcast.
  • In this module, completely fill out the "Pre-Production Planning Document (PODCAST)" for your own podcast.

The Documentation

Analyzing... with C0deysseus Podcast [Documentation]

For this podcast, I actually turned to my best friend for inspiration. I don't exactly listen to podcasts... well, ever, so I sent her a quick text for inspiration. When she wrote back "social issues in animation over the years, or anime!", I knew that was it. My best friend Kate is a Disney expert, and for good reason—she plans on becoming the CEO of Disney one day, and I'm rooting for her every step of the way. I planned this production a little backwars, as Kate and I met to talk about all of the social issues and norms Disney has presented in each and every Disney princess movie, but I felt that starting with too much information was a good starting place. I initially thought that the full podcast was due this week, so I ended up recording everything we had previously spoken about over the weekend. We ended up recording about 30 minutes worth of a discussion, and I tweaked and revised my initial plan from there.
(Check out the original mind map below; the original theme of this podcast was to discuss all of the social norms and issues portrayed by Disney princesses throught the years)

Character Information Mockups, V1 - Musings Of, Landing Page

Needless to say, there was no way I was going to be able to fit all that audio into a 2 minute podcast. So I worked backwards; I listened to the audio Kate and I had recorded and pulled out a section I thought we talked the most about—and that was about Belle in Beauty and the Beast and her Stockholm Syndrome and initial independent nature. Instead of focusing on all the Disney princesses and how they were all portrayed, I decided to focus in more on how Disney chose to portray their second-most-independent chararacter to date (Ariel being the first). I actually based a lot of the script dialogue on the conversations we already had about this movie, but I edited and revised it to make it more coherent. Although Kate is a Disney expert and is a long-time fan, I also enjoy Disney's movies and find the social norms and issues portrayed in them extremely interesting. Planning this podcast has been stressful (I really, really thought the whole podcast was due this week), but it's been fun nonetheless—and I'm excited to record again with Kate. The issues I foresee with this project are going to be recording the audio and fitting it into a mere 2 minutes. Kate and I always talk a lot and have a lot to talk about, and I hope that I'll be able to get a balance going between all the talking we do and the needed SFX/music and intro/outro themes.

The Podcast

Analyzing... with C0deysseus: Decoding a Disney Princess [Podcast]

The production structure behind this project has three parts: the first is me having a panic attack thinking that it was due 5/27. The second part is me recording around 45 minutes worth of audio for the original mind map and hoping I get some quality audio that I will then be able to pull out and make a 2-minute segment for the podcast that I eventually realized is due the week after instead on 6/3. And the third part is me venturing back to my friend Kate's place in order to record a second time with a script I pieced together and cleaned up from that original recording. Although the process ended up being a bit backwards, I think it was helpful nonetheless in providing me with a good starting place which then allowed me to focus in on what I really wanted my podcast to be about. All vocal audio was recorded in Audacity, and everything else was then added in appropriately and adjusted as needed.
Enjoy the final product!
